If you never leave your native culture, you’re bound by it forever without realizing it. If you ask a person about their culture it’s like asking a fish in water about water, what can they say? (Donald Richie)

Writers Donald Richie and Angela Carter both lived in Japan as the foreigner—an outsider in society. Donald’s life-long residency in Japan provided a clear and objective awareness of his adopted country; an objectivity that could be described as the freedom from belonging to a nation. Angela Carter came to Japan to escape the confines of her own society and situation. Both writers describe their experiences in clear, lyrical prose that speaks to the individual of any culture. This musical theater piece is based on the works of these two exceptional writers.
