Every summer, the Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies at Columbia University sponsors a six week program in Japan for Columbia students to study instruments of gagaku and hogaku. At the beginning of June, five to six protégés arrive to undertake intensive training with some of Japan’s best teachers of gagaku,koto and shakuhachi. This year, with cooperation from Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin, the students will present a student recital with their mentors.
