Christopher Yohmei Blasdel Shakuhachi Recital

Forty Years of Shakuhachi

A single bamboo flute provides the doorway to another world. Christopher Yohmei has been performing the shakuhachi in Japan and around the world for forty years, and this recital is a celebration of his musical journey. The recital will feature a representation of shakuhachi pieces, ranging from the plaintive, early style meditative solo music to the highly ornamented Kinko Style as defined by Christopher's teacher, the late Yamaguchi Goro. The recital will conclude with an exlposive and energic composition by Hirose Ryohei.

This concert, taking place in an elegant 201 year old Izu townhouse, will feature Edo period honkyoku, performed on both modern and period instruments. The program also features a contemporary composition in the deep meditative style of traditional honkyoku.

Details The Prague Shakuhachi Summer School 2009 is an important European shakuhachi event that approaches the instrument from many different perspectives, from the theoretical to the practical, from the traditional to the contemporary. Each day the event features day-long master-classes, a yoga lesson, one academic lecture and one concert.

The event will host shakuhachi players Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, Jim Franklin, Kesuke Zenyoji and Vlastislav Matoušek, who will each teach one single composition throughout the entire event in their class for advanced and intemediate students. Additionally, the respected koto player, koto player, Haruko Watanabe, will be joining the festival from Japan. She will perform at the concerts and play at Sankyoku classes. Another special guest will be opera singer, Nao Higano.

Beginners are most welcome, with lessons focusing on sound production and simple compositions.
